Psychologists study behavior and mental experience. Neuroscientists study how brain activity leads to conscious experience and action. Many professionals in the field of psychology help people when something is going wrong with their mood, perception, behavior, or the nervous system. Psychology is a broad degree that can lead to jobs in diverse fields!

Career Opportunities

NMT offers both a Bachelors of Arts and a Bachelors of Science in psychology, creating a wide variety of opportunities.

Some students who major in psychology will go into research.

Other students will use their knowledge of human nature to pursue graduate or professional school in another area (such as law school, medicine, education, and human resources in industry) for which psychology is great preparation.

Another group of psychology graduates will go on to post-graduation training in professional psychology jobs such as research, medicine, social work, clinical work and therapy, counseling, speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy, cybersecurity, law, military, education, finance, technology, user experience, government policy, and employee relations.

Program outcomes

Psychology students acquire the fundamentals of learning and memory, reasoning and problem solving, perception, emotion, attention, thought, language and communication, the development of all these processes and their pathology.

Students conduct laboratory experiments on the psychological and physiological bases of behavior. The department has a modern animal care facility for laboratory classes and research. There are many opportunities for independent research.

Student learning outcomes in undergraduate Psychology:

Knowledge base in Psychology.

Students should demonstrate fundamental knowledge and comprehension of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, historical trends, and empirical findings, to discuss how psychological principles apply to behavioral phenomena.

Scientific inquiry and critical thinking.

Students develop scientific reasoning and problem solving in their interpretation of research. They design and perform effective research methods. They draw conclusions about psychological phenomena from the evidence.

Ethical and social responsibility in a diverse world.

Students develop ethically and socially responsible behaviors for professional and personal settings in a landscape that involves increasing diversity. Students demonstrate values that strengthen community relations and contributions.

Communication.

Students demonstrate competence in writing and in oral and interpersonal communication skills. They argue cogently; express ideas clearly; optimize information exchange; and promote ongoing relations with audiences.

Professional development.

Students apply psychology-specific content and skills, reflect on work effectively, manage projects skillfully, work productively in teams, and prepare for meaningful careers.
